Grove City Police School Safety Tips

With schools opening during the few weeks, the Grove City Division of Police offer pedestrian safety tips to children and adults.

Even the most cautious children can forget safety rules as they are caught up in the excitement of a new school year. Reviewing a few of the most important back-to-school safety tips with your children helps ensure their safety as they begin the new year.

Remind children of the basics when crossing a street: Look to the right, then to the left and then to the right again and only cross when there are no vehicles approaching. If children are crossing at an intersection, it is important that they watch for cars making turns in their crossing path. Children should always walk with at least one other child.

Crossing the street safely is also important for children who ride bicycles to school. Remind your children that bicycle riders must pay special attention to the surroundings and ride their bikes as far as possible to the right side of the road. Make sure your children stop when approaching a driveway and explain that it might not be easy for someone backing out of a driveway to see a child on a bicycle. Helmets should always be worn to prevent injuries.

Be attentive and cautious during the first days back to school. School buses are back on the road, you may want to adjust your drive time to work.  Many children will be going to school for the very first time. Drivers are encouraged to use extra care.
